Assumptions

The Assumptions page lists the values your plan’s results use. The Assumptions panel on Harbor View lets you try a few of them.

Open the Assumptions page

Short answer: The page shows the values behind your latest saved result. Anyone in the household can read it, including view-only members.

Steps

  1. On Harbor View, select “Your plan’s assumptions” at the bottom of the page.
  2. Or open the Assumptions panel and select “See all assumptions ›”.
  3. If you belong to more than one household, pick one under “Household”.

What you’ll see / what it means Three sections: “About these results”, “Your plan’s assumptions” and “Notes on this result”.

If that didn’t work… “You don’t have a household yet.” means setup isn’t finished. “No saved result yet. Choose Update my plan on Harbor View.” means your plan hasn’t run yet.

About these results

Short answer: A short statement about what your results are.

What you’ll see / what it means It says the results are “hypothetical, illustrative estimates”, based on what you entered and the assumptions listed. They are not guarantees. It ends: “PlanHarbor gives information, not investment, tax or legal advice.”

Your plan’s assumptions

Short answer: Each value your latest result used, grouped by topic.

What you’ll see / what it means

  • The first line names your plan and the result’s date, such as “Baseline: the values used by the results calculated Oct 2, 2026.”
  • People: each person’s retirement age, planning age, Social Security age and Medicare age. “Social Security when retiring (62 to 70)” means it starts when that person retires.
  • Spending:
    • “Monthly target”: what you plan to spend each month, in today’s dollars, after tax. It doesn’t count healthcare and debt payments.
    • “Cushion”: an extra share above the target.
    • “For a surviving partner”: the share of spending kept if one of two people dies.
    • “Emergency reserve”: the amount kept in cash.
  • Rates: “Inflation”, “Social Security increase”, “Healthcare costs” and “Cash”, each per year.
  • Investments: a table of each kind you hold.
    • “Return”: its expected yearly return.
    • “Income”: the part paid out as income. “A year’s return includes its income.”
    • “Volatility”: how much a year’s return tends to swing. A dash means none.
  • How the money is used:
    • “Growth share”: your share in growth investments, such as “70% now, 50% at retirement, 40% from 10 years after.” Or “Each account keeps today’s mix.”
    • “Withdrawals”: the order money comes out of your accounts, such as “Taxable accounts first, then tax-deferred, then Roth.”
    • “Goal”: the goal your result is compared with, such as “85% of futures last”.
  • Taxes: “Where you live”, any “Local income tax”, and “Heirs’ tax rate” on inherited tax-deferred money.

If that didn’t work… “No investments with holdings in this result.” means the result had none to list.

Notes on this result

Short answer: Short notes about something in your plan, with the years they apply to.

What you’ll see / what it means

  • Each note ends with its years in brackets, such as “(2058 and 2060)”.
  • Examples: “A debt marked paid off still had a balance; it counts as $0.” or “A Roth conversion happens before age 59½.”
  • “No notes for this result.” means there are none.

If that didn’t work… “Notes appear with a saved result.” Select “Update my plan” on Harbor View first.

Out-of-date results

Short answer: Your plan changed after the result was made.

Steps

  1. Go to Harbor View.
  2. Select “Update my plan”.

What you’ll see / what it means “These results are out of date. Update your plan on Harbor View.” The values shown are still the ones that result used.

If that didn’t work… “Your plan is updating now.” means an update is already running. The page shows the new values once it’s done.

The Assumptions panel

Short answer: Try a market setting, inflation and your share in stocks. Your plan changes only when you select “Update my plan”.

Steps

  1. On Harbor View, select the setting chip on the result card, such as “Optimistic · Today’s dollars”. Or select “Assumptions” at the top of the menu.
  2. Under “Markets”, pick “Optimistic”, “Average” or “Pessimistic”. This also fills in “Inflation”.
  3. Change “Inflation” or “Share in stocks” if you like.
  4. Select “Update my plan”, or “Cancel”.

What you’ll see / what it means

  • “Your mix: about 9.70% a year before inflation.” is your mix’s expected yearly return under the saved setting.
  • “Your own numbers” means your plan uses return figures you entered yourself. “Picking a setting replaces them.”
  • “Share in stocks” has a slider and a box. “Your mix comes from your accounts.” means it isn’t set here.
  • “Show amounts in” switches between “Today’s dollars” and “Future dollars”. It applies at once and doesn’t change your plan.
  • After “Update my plan”, the panel closes and your plan updates on Harbor View.
  • Close the panel with “Close”, Escape, or a click outside it.

If that didn’t work…

  • “Update my plan” stays off until something changes.
  • “Enter 0 to 10.” Inflation takes 0 to 10 percent.
  • “Enter 0 to 100.” Share in stocks takes 0 to 100 percent.
  • “Your plan is updating now.” Wait for the update to finish.
  • “This household doesn’t have a plan yet.” Finish setup first.
  • If another message keeps appearing, contact support.

View-only access

Short answer: You can read every value, but only “Show amounts in” works in the panel.

What you’ll see / what it means The settings are greyed out, and “Update my plan” and “Cancel” don’t appear.

If that didn’t work… “You have view-only access to this household.” Ask the household’s owner to make the change.
